:: Doves - Kingdom Of RustDovesWhen Manchester band Doves first came to my attention about ten years, just prior to the release of their fantastic debut album Lost Souls, I knew this was a special band that was worth following. They haven‘t let me nor their legion of fans down with the quality music they've provided. Many of their tunes have probably been underrated to some extent. Yet, more people should start to take note, as Doves produce one of their finest efforts on their fourth album Kingdom Of Rust. Many other bands would long to write songs as good as these. Some examples are the slinking track 'Compulsion’, the big, expansive drum and electronic sound of ‘The Outsiders’, the fascinating build-up towards a noisy crescendo on ‘10.03’, and the melodic charm of ‘Birds Flew Backwards’. The title track is a joyous wonder, with trademark Jimi Goodwin vocals bounding with energy on the chorus. It‘s all there in an even fashion, i.e. probably not a huge number of standout singles apparent, but an all-round great set of songs. A brilliant album that should increase Doves’ fanbase. It reinforces my opinion of them being one of the best bands in the business. | ![]() |
