The Dresden Dolls

This band (duo of Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione, come from Boston, and are a true revelation. If you want to be inspired into a punk cabaret style of music, then this is sheer bliss. The album is remarkable for the blitzing, frenetic musicianship. On one hand there is Amanda on piano and singing triumphantly and mischievously. Then, Brian’s frantic drumming sense to create somewhat eerie noises at times, but keeping the attention. It all integrates beautifully and cleverly. Some highlights include the forcing, thrilling ‘Girl Anachronism’ and the seductive ‘Missed Me’. But my initial impressions suggest something generally exciting throughout the whole record. I had heard from sources overseas how good this band is live. One can imagine how dynamic they should recreate these songs, based on how ferociously and fiercely they play on this record. Seeing Amanda play her dark-shaded piano live would be a heck of a thrill. The dynamics between the vocals, drums, and piano is the core of the production and it works smashingly.
