She had been tippied as a star to emerge in 2008, and they have got it right. Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy has proved to be of exceptional talent. “Rockferry” is about the good, old-fashioned motto of being able to write good songs, full of charm and soul. Already, “Mercy” proved to be an instant hit across Britain, Australia and beyond. The song's chorus is absolutely fantastic and is really what makes this one so powerful. There is also a brilliant drumbeat. Duffy kicks off the album in tremendous style with the title track. It's an excellent launching point for the album, a perfect presentation of her soulful music. It is such a powerful track and certainly grabs your attention right from the offset. Her big boisterous voice is likeable on various levels - able to capture the essence of soul music, the gorgeous pop tune, a lounge-style ballad, and rising to rich, epic proportions. Duffy is able to speak her mind in song, showing a healthy state of self-awareness and belief. There are varying moods and temperatures that rise to touch the listener, with the final song “Distant Dreamer” being a soaring epic that has Duffy contemplating life's ambitions. It sums up her toughness and resilience. This is a stirring musical journey from a hugely talented artist. For a debut album it's remarkably consistent and confident, and promises great things to come for the future.
