Farryl Purkiss

Close your eyes and you could easily imagine Farryl Purkiss is sitting on your living room floor, strumming his guitar and staring soulfully into your eyes…the fantasy is made all the more alluring (and improbable) given that Purkiss sidelines as a professional surfer and model in his native South Africa. His surfing connections, musical style, and even the song titles like (‘Times Like These’) mean that it’s no stretch to make the connection between Purkiss and his erstwhile hero Jack Johnson. Indeed, it was Johnson who first encouraged Purkiss to launch his career as a musician after a chance meeting at a surf competition. While Purkiss undoubtedly wears his influences on his sleeve, there is a real musicality here that sets this album apart from the surfboard toting imitators. Solo acoustic instrumental ‘Speechless’ is one of the albums highlights. ‘Please Stay’ is uplifting and heartbreaking all at once, showing off this singer-songwriter’s ability to make a deep impression with just a light touch of the guitar frets. Take this album down to the holiday house this summer to instantly create the relaxed and intimate feeling of an impromptu campfire session.
