Fort Knox Five debut album, Radio Free DC, has arrived just in time for summer. The Washington DC funk band has been the leading current crop of new bands in the international funk and breaks scene. Radio Free DC does a great job of managing their renowned ‘Fort Knox Sound’ which marries sharp hip hop cuts with organic instrumentation. Opener, `Insight’, has an old school hip hop flavour with a hand waving chorus made for summer festivals. ‘Funk for Peace‘ is spaced out funk jam which sounds like worthy tribute to Sly and the Family Stone. 'The Spirit of '75’ is a string laden all out funk attack, and the electro tinged ‘The Party Pusher’ also shows their deft production skills. Radio Free DC is a worthy addition for retro and neo-funk aficionados. It's an unabashed ode to all things funky and a definite way to get any party started.
