30 Odd Foot Of Grunts

He is a man of many pre-occupations, being sort after for movie script after movie script. It is refreshing that through the hoo-ha over Russell Crowe’s activities in movies that he has expressed his desire to make things happen with his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. Russell and his band provide us with some gentle, soulful moments of reflection, with a taste of his love for blues music evident. The band shows some polish with the talent of ex-Utopian Babies lead singer Dave Wilkins playing a hand in the band and with production duties. With the addition of trumpets and other instruments throughout, there’s a potential for better things. The deep, rich voice appeals as something suited to a particular market more than gaining widespread appeal. It’s well suited for the songs about friends and broken romances. Generally, the sound may need a bit more oomph and refinement to be rated highly, but for the right time in the right place, it’s a solid effort. Highlights include “Sail Those Same Oceans”, “Somebody Else’s Princess” (it’s a more rollicking feel with a certain verve), and a special moment “Memorial Day”, where Russell relives his grandfather’s wartime service. Much pride and sentiment underscore the feeling of this song. http://www.gruntland.com
