A

It seems that ‘A’ are Britain’s contribution to the big-shorted punk rock movement and that makes for some slightly different approaches. There is an emphasis on using electronic blips and beeps alongside the typically distorted guitars and punked-up drumming, hence ‘A’ are playing with a few genres – punk, metal and a pinch of techno. Like many of the current crop of punk bands, these guys aren’t young (unlike their audience) and while that sometimes makes the ‘youthful angst’ that is so compulsory to this kind of music a bit hard to swallow, in this case I suspect age and experience have enabled the deft song structuring that is present throughout this album. They know how to write a catchy hook too. In this respect ‘A’ are pretty similar to Bodyjar (see track 9, ‘Pacific Ocean Blue’). The CD booklet includes all the lyrics, with a brief explanation from the band of what each song is about. ‘A’ continue to improve with each release, making a great leap forward with Hi-Fi Serious.
