:: Watching Angels MendAlex LloydHis second solo album contains more melodic pop touches and effective use of instrumentation, particularly strings. Alex’s smooth, emotive vocals go well with the well-crafted tunes. You will remember that Alex played most of the instruments on the first album. Now he brings in other players to widen the musical landscape. He has five musicians capably assisting – including Guy Pratt from Pink Floyd and Clive Deamer from Portishead. There is a good, cruisy feel throughout. The pop feel of “Everybody’s Laughing” is the opening track and it sets the right tone. “Green” has a riveting finish with its cool guitar-driven sound. “My Friend” has a gorgeous pedal steel guitar and catchy lyrics. “Amazing” is one of the best Australian singles of 2001 with it grand chorus and excellent loops and overall production values. The organic approach makes it especially distinctive. There are hints of joy hidden amongst tales of broken hearts and regrets. He shows his deft touch in combining organs, strings, and full-blooded vocals. Alex strips it all back in the final track “Easy Exit Station” to just he and his guitar. The more you listen to “Watching Angels Mend”, the more you will enjoy the well-paced, subtle rhythms. It’s a worthy album. |
