Blindspott

It’s been a heady twelve months for this band from Auckland, New Zealand. They’ve topped charts and scored a major label deal, thereby attracting a series of major promotions. With the turntables, drums, guitar, and bass evident in their metal rock pitch, Blindspott fits into the nu-metal category, a category that won’t sit well with all who like the hard rock flavour. However, it’s best to take this band on face value and not compare them too readily. The production is well apparent and they know how to create heavy and atmospheric breaks. There is plenty of radio-friendly music, eg “Nil By Mouth”, “Mind Dependency”, and “Suffocate” to name a few. The earnest sound can sometimes be a bit overplayed but it’s probably an interesting exercise to see them dabble in something more experimental, like the beats-driven “Phlex”. The fantastic impact of “Ilah (Silent War)” is another must-hear track. These two songs are pleasant surprises that could signal a new direction, and shows them to reach out into new boundaries. What Blindspott has achieved in a short space of time is commendable and they look an exciting prospect.
