:: LargoBrad MehldauThere is much to be admired here. Largo is a small Irish pub in Los Angeles – a home where countless talented musicians have played. Jon Brion, who is known for his underground pop music work, and therefore carries a rare approach to jazz, produces this album. Brad Mehldau is very adept at adding textures and emotions through his technical expertise. His love of pop underscores the general theme of this CD. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but, in my mind, it’s one of the best listens of 2002. It’s a revelation of high quality. Listen to the jazz experimentation on “Franklin Avenue” and “When It Rains”. The brass accompaniment on the latter song adds to the intricate arrangement of horns and piano. It’s very ingenious and absorbing. Brad utilises techniques and instruments that are cutting-edge and he arranged all the music on the album. There is even a version of the classic Radiohead track “Paranoid Android” where the melody is incredible and he creates a more progressive approach. “Dear Prudence” gets a cool bass, drums and acoustic piano treatment, and it works a treat. Then there is “Wave”/”Mother Nature’s Son”, done beautifully. Brad Mehldau acknowledges his appreciation for quality rock music and his eclecticism is a key to admirable improvisation. Highly recommended. |
