Clann Zu

Having seen them live a couple of times, it was worthwhile to check the EP release from this Melbourne band. Various styles epitomise their sound, from hip-hop to hard rock. The focal point is vocalist Declan de Barra, a charismatic frontman who sets a high standard for himself. He is intense and the vocals soar to good heights in the effort to impose himself on the audience. A few rough edges within the whole band structure can be refined to make the sound more fulfilling. There are several noteworthy tracks, including Of Course It Is”, a big orchestral sound with strings and drums adding much to the rough guitars. A slow organ beginning heralds the start of the extra-long “Absence Makes The Heart Die”, while a distinct electro-pop influence is evident on “Hi Fat Lo Fat”. It’s a well-compiled collection that indicates potential for better things.
