:: Eat At WhiteyâsEverlastIt’s amazing how musical careers develop. This southern Californian “white boy who can rap” had an inauspicious start to his career about ten years ago. But faith between Everlast and the Tommy Boy record label has seen him endure into a more confident and talented artist. The propelling of his songwriting talent saw greater recognition, and a Grammy Award for his collaboration with Santana on “Put Your Light On”. This brought a greater audience to him. Now, “Eat At Whitey’s” is the result of all that’s taken shape over the past two years. Everlast is able to combine black and white music with ease. This album has an array of wonderful guest vocalists and rappers to boot – a wonderful mix of styles. “Black Coffee” is a soulful tune that features the gorgeous vocal talent of Merry Clayton (she sang on “Gimme Shelter” by the Rolling Stones). His own energy and capacity shows fervently on “Black Jesus”, a very charismatic output in an inspiring song. Other highlights include the contributions by N’Dea Davenport on “One And The Same” and “Love For Real”, plus the combination of Everlast with Cypress Hill’s B-Real on the strong, hip-hop excursion, “Deadly Assassins”. A couple of patchy tracks lower the overall standard slightly. Nevertheless, Everlast’s distinctive vocals stand tall and the instrumentation captures a wide array of favourable ingredients. |
