:: International SuperhitsGreen DayInternational Superhits is the name of Green Day’s first best of compilation. It’s a pretty comprehensive release showcasing the band’s journey from teenage punk party band churning out faves such as “When I Come Around” and “Basketcase” to the more mature band of today and the latest release “Warning” album. All the big hits are here as well as a couple of new tracks, “Maria” harks back to the earlier days of carefree punk with big choruses and riffing guitars. “Poprocks & Coke” in contrast, is more in keeping with the later stuff from the trio, a bit more restrained. Perhaps surprisingly, given the supposed ‘disposal’ value early on, none of the songs sound dated. “When I Come Around” sounds like it will live forever, while “Basketcase” and “Longview”, a very good song about teenage frustration also sound relatively fresh – that’s to name but a few. Green Day’s mega selling ballad “Good Riddance (Time of your Life)” is included, this song will always remind me of the final Seinfeld episode! Some of my favourite tracks are the cuts from “Warning” at the end, which, since reviewing it last year has easily been one of the most played CDs in my collection. A very good and comprehensive collection from a band that will only get better in years to come. |
