:: Bodily Functions

Herbert

From a previewing of some tracks early in 2001 when he came to Australia, we are now blessed with the full package from Matthew Herbert. There are some wonderful moments of musical expressions here; both introspective and quirky. For starters, a very melancholy mood epitomises the opening track “You’re Unknown To Me”. A listen to track 11”Addiction” reveals the scratchy sound of a mouse trying to get out of a bin it had fallen in at the studio – such propensity for exactness of detail. “Around The House” features a series of noises based upon what appliances and objects might be found at home. Generally, you will find what you explore here. There is some trace of real jazz, with gorgeous woodwind elements firing up beautifully. The groove is deep and meaningful with an attractive simplicity shining through. Herbert comes to a grand closing with “The Audience”, a track that builds through some notably graceful piano chords “Bodily Functions” has all the ingredients of Herbert’s inside artistry and a CD to savour. http://www.matthewherbert.com
