:: Make Yourself

Incubus

Though Incubus has been around for a couple of years this new album, “Make Yourself” is the one getting all the attention for them. It varies from their previous album S.C.I.E.N.C.E that had more of an aggressive feel to the music. But with this, the band seems to have strayed from their original sound and moved to a more melodic, soulful feel adding hip-hop and rock and blending it together to make it as one. The first three songs on the album seem to relate back to their old styles as a reminder of the musical roots yet, as the album plays on, the song “The Warmth” slows things down a little with the haunting guitar riffs and melodic vocals of the chorus. Then “Stellar” provides another ballad with a space-rock feel. Another ballad is “I Miss You”. This song, musically, is brilliant but in some parts fails, lyrically, with some words sounding juvenile as if they don’t fit in. But then the heavier songs come in, with “Pardon Me”, “Make Yourself”, “Clean”, “Out From Under” and the awesome instrumental scratches of DJ Kilmore with “Battlestar Scralatchtica”, which seems to offer more funk than just rock. The album as a whole is quite brilliant as each song differs from the next. Brandon’s voice is exceptional and it has this amazing soothing feel. The band has vast musical talent that ranges from each side of the spectrum, giving Incubus a new flavour and adding more of a broader audience to what is already a huge fan based group. Watch for their live shows when they tour Australia soon.
