:: All Is DreamMercury RevAfter their wonderful “Deserter’s Songs” album of nearly four years ago, much speculation has surfaced about the follow-up effort for Mercury Rev. This new album still sees some similarities – not such a bad thing – in terms of the moods and texture. There are a few little twists with the sweet and dark moments with which vocalist Jonathan Donahue’s seduces the discerning listener. The lyrics seem more narrative and reflective, and the little idiosyncrasies make it appealing and mysterious. “The Dark Is Rising” sets the scene for this experience. Highlights to note are “A Drop In Time”, a well-orchestrated pop tune, and “Tides Of The Moon”, with the spiralling guitars. The piano and strings of “Chains” add to the sometimes-eerie mood. Mercury Rev is a unique band with a unique musical sense and you’ll dream your way into enjoyment by giving them a worthy listen. |
