:: Hung Up On Breathing

Moodroom

This five-piece band hails from Washington DC and had previously released a couple of underground EPs. This debut album is quite impressive. There is lots of melody and emotion through the versatile vocals of sultry, lead singer and songwriter Stef Magro. She can growl with the best of them and polish herself full of emotion. As in the band’s name, they can switch moods. Elements of electronica, bass ‘n’ drums, driving guitars and heartfelt ballads are all on show. The opening track “Loving” has smooth vocals and fine rhythms while highlights are “Declined” and “Connection”. The album ends with “Blue Skies And All That” – it has a spoken word verse and builds into a maze of guitars and keyboards. You might hear a slice of Garbage in the distorted sounds and the hooks of Catatonia. Generally, these are clever songs that should set Moodroom for a productive chapter in their career. They have a true alternative leaning and are signed to the indie label Fowl Records. They have attracted a cult following through catchy and clean sounds, and provide an interesting mix of pop and club rhythms. They are possibly a new hope for American rock music.
