:: Super SoundPepe DeluxeRecorded approximately eighteen months ago, this three-piece band from Finland delivers a cool indie album that sprung to my attention early this year. It is inspired by hip-hop beats and begins impressively with “Three Times A Player”. The impact comes from DJ Slow, the four-time Finnish DMC national champion. He is accompanied by Ja-Jazz, a freak who loves jazz, hip-hop and funk. Sampler wizard James Spectrum adds his electronic creativity to fuse it together. Throughout the album, one can sense the breathing of elements fused from today’s stars such as Fatboy Slim and Moby. “Big Muff” is another well-crafted song that impacts strongly. One of the standout tracks is “Woman In Blue” that demonstrates a brisk merging of jazz and hip-hop, interspersed with a fine vocal. Overall, there is a good range of songs that kick strongly; very diverse and entertaining, comprising quality pop hooks and charismatic breakbeats. It would be worthwhile listening to more recent material. This is satisfying for those wanting to be introduced to the band. Check the label’s website for more at http://www.emperornorton.com. |
