:: The May Street ProjectShea SegerShe has a voice that belies her youthful looks. Shea is based in London, although she comes from Texas. Accordingly, she is earning admiration for her music within Europe. There’s a hint of Sheryl Crow with her power and passion. It’s quite an ambitious first-up effort. The music is very accomplished and tasteful, verring widely between insightful, acoustic-based songs to a mild hip-hop style. Shea starts strongly with “Last Time”, a warm, gritty pop-rock number. There is a very good collaboration with Ron Sexsmith on the soul-flavoured “Always”, plus fine moments of perspective singing on the title track and “I Can’t Lie”. The title track is a poignant song where Shea tells the world of her life in her hometown. There is also the mature, appealing vocal on “Isn’t It Good Tonight”. She can stray between the simple and classy music styles but shows she has the right ingredients. Shea strikes me as an artist set to take her own particular course with her own boldly, unique ways. This album will definitely grow on you with a few listens. |
