:: Saturday Night Live

Simon London

Saturday Night Live was recorded one night at Clancy’s Fish Pub in Perth and the album has the intimacy of a performer connecting with an audience. Simon London’s music is rock-driven country fuelled with warmth and honesty. Coming from rural Western Australia, London is no rough-cut diamond - he’s a seasoned performer having toured California in the mid-90s with now defunct band, Ochre. “Give Me Some Love” is a classic rock-a-billy road-trip hit that it seems like a tribute to Johnny Cash, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. London’s stirring lyrics on love, travelling and a longing of home, is carried superbly by his earthy and deep vocals against plaintive chords rendered by nifty acoustic guitar work. Listen to “Maria”, “December” and “Infidel” and you’ll know what I mean. Sample the poetry of London’s lyrics in “December”, “It feels like I can‘t even help myself / the taste of whisky always brings me down/ I spent my last money trying to make some far off place / I spent six days thumbing my way home / And I’m not scared of sleeping in road-side ditches / And I’m not one for using cheap hotels / My friend thinks I’m a gypsy / She don’t understand / There’s just no place I can call my home”. It’s a beautifully crafted album that speaks to your heart.
