Simple Minds

From a band that rose to great heights on the world music scene, Simple Minds return to provide an album of “cover versions”. One could question the viability of such an exercise and it may not be seen in great light, though one can’t question the ability of Jim Kerr and his band as musicians. It’s simply that people will ask why this album was done. Whatever some will say, Simple Minds do justice, however, to most of the songs selected here. They indulge in “The Man Who Sold The World”, acknowledging David Bowie as a favourite of theirs. With a bouncy, electronic groove, they touch on some other interesting songs, including “Gloria”, and The Doors’ “Hello, I Love You”. Jim Kerr does a fine job with an early Human League song “Being Boiled”. The reworking of the songs has been well examined by the band and is well executed. In light of this album, many of their fans will await any new material that Simple Minds are working on. With their foray into more progressive beats and sounds, it could be yet be a resurgence to savour.
