:: The GoSkunkhourAfter a period of reassessment and changing record labels, Skunkhour make a welcome return with an album fulfilling their aim to bring back some groove sensibilities of old to “The Go”. There is still some good experimentation and the band has thrown around ideas to produce an effective set, breaking up some drums and bass sounds innovatively. We had a taste of what to expect when they released the wonderful single “Home” in late 1999. That track, with an uplifting pop groove, is sure to be a live favourite for them because of its infectious sing-a-long rhythm. It is a real shame that this song didn’t receive its deserved success. “Gold Radiation” is the most recent single, and another likely party favourite with its lively feel. The familiar Skunkhour funkiness shines on “Today Tomorrow Yesterday”, an extremely positive number that helps generate the overall vibe of the album. We get an instrumental pacifier in “Green Grocer”, a subtle shift. The song “Stadium” is one I first heard on the soundtrack to the film “Two Hands”. It has a dark theme and, with a funky bass, has been revised as disco-pop number now. Lead singer Aya Larkin closes the album with a smooth, mood-setting song “Anywhere”. We should all look forward to Skunkhour’s live performances from now on, just to witness some of these terrific songs from “The Go”. It’s an excellent listen. |
