The Welsh band has a determined look and feel about the music they create, and it’s been interesting to follow their progression from the start. Much passion and raw energy goes into their music. This new album sees a widening of scope with the use of brass and strings into the mix, giving a clever groove to some of the songs. Kelly Jones remains a formidable lead singer with his trademark raspy vocals. I understand that the album was recorded very quickly and the feel shows something frenetic and impulsive. Some of the songs to watch out for are “Maybe Tomorrow” with its subtle keys and driving guitars, the warm, melodic bliss of “Getaway” and “Since I Told You It’s Over”, and “Madam Helga”, which shows a more blistering style and Kelly’s soaring voice at its best. This is one band that displays great passion and concentration amid a collection of variable musical landscapes. Good value as always.
