:: White PrintzThe BumblebeezThis is one of the funkiest white boy rap EPs to emerge from the Australian scene since The Avalanches’ El Producto in 97 and it’s made by 22 year old producer Chris Colonna, his 20 year old sister Pia (Queen Vila) and four friends. Beginning with the slower sounds and samples of “Duno”, then, with no hesitation, kicks in with Step Back’s malicious white boy punk rock rap assault of beats and loops and the occasional screams of Queen Vila; a perfect fusion of styles that gives you belief in the Australian scene again, showing that there’s more going on than the tiresome rock revival thing. Next up “I’ve Come With Water” is a simple but funky as hell track that’ll have you dancing for the entire two minute duration before having your ears filled with the scream that starts Let’s Go, a patchy little punk rock ditty with beats and fuzzy guitars with jagged edges to boot. Other notable mentions on this eight track EP include “Get Dressed”, the perfect track to drop while getting ready to go out for a big night or to liven up any party; the Triple J backed “Microphone Diseases” and “Pony Ride”. This EP is a fine and funky trip from start to finish, all killer, no filler. You don’t have to look to hard to find why Astralwerks are so desperately trying to ink a deal in the US with these youngsters. The artwork also deserves an honourable mention - a colourful, old school digi-pack. It takes more than one viewing to take it all in, made up of bus tickets, boarding passes, scribbled notes, stick figure drawings and passport photos etc. This is definitely one of the more promising releases of this year. |
