:: Your New Favourite BandThe HivesVery credible garage rock from this Swedish band. They are the labelmates of prominent band Millencolin, of whom we’ve spoken highly of previously. The Hives produce a different sound to what we might expect from the generally punk-oriented label. They are very much a 60s garage band who profess, through the album’s title, that they are the best new thing around. Certainly, they demonstrate great skill and attitude. This album shows off tracks from previous album and single releases, and listeners should enjoy this “best of” CD. It is slick and the concise arrangements grab you at the start. The vocals are intense and feverish. “Main Offender” epitomises the garage rock style in a raw, strong captivating sound. They pound away sternly in elevating energy and spirit throughout the song. The punk influences can be felt at times and they hardly slow from their frenetic pace. Give them a listen and you’ll be grabbed. |
