The Sleepy Jackson

The debut album for this Perth band signals their arrival as a future force in Australian music. This collection should satisfy any music-minded supporter. Wonderful images and atmospheres are provided in the eleven tracks. Luke Steele leads his band through a classy, polished set, beginning with “Good Dancers”, which showcases a proficient slide guitar and a terrific chorus. The range that this band displays carries through further excellent tracks, namely the well-produced “Rain Falls For Wind”, the fashionable beats and likeable stomp of “Vampire Racecourse”, and “Tell The Girls That I’m Not Hangin Out”, emphasising a brilliant synth input. There is plenty to drool over as The Sleepy Jackson reach new boundaries and kick into new textures and character. It’s great to see how they’ve developed since the late 90s when I was first alerted to the potential they held. It’s all starting to come together pleasingly. “Lovers” is one of the best Australian albums of the year.
