:: Andrew Denton – Musical Challenge 2

Various Artists

Twelve months ago, radio disc jockey Andrew Denton took on a project where he gathered a number of current and not-so-current music stars to do renditions of songs that were virtually opposite to their normal style. It was a success and it brought much amusement for listeners. Denton now returns with his second instalment, and the same laughable charm and deftness in shown by the participating artists. There are a few highlights. The Superjesus perform The Village People’s “You Can’t Stop The Music” in a bouncy, energetic effort, and Killing Heidi’s acoustic version of “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”. The Living End provides a burst of power in doing “Baby, I’m A Want You”. The Human Nature version of “TNT” doesn’t really convince, while a moment of hilarity and a must-listen sees The Cruel Sea perform Minnie Riperton’s “Loving You”. To hear the high-pitched Tex Perkins is something to savour. Kiwi band Zed played up the Spanish sentimentality of “Una Paloma Blanca” and those old hard rockers The Angels perform “Morning Train”. Lead singer Doc Neeson sounds like Lee Marvin. I don’t think the version of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Scandal’us will entertain too many. There’s much fun to be had though.
