:: Doing The James BrownVarious ArtistsA funky tribute to the influential career of the ‘Godfather of Soul’. This album is a good collection of songs performed by James as well as famous (and not so famous) covers of his work. For the producers of this CD, it was obviously a labour of love. It contains what I would imagine to be some pretty obscure recordings from even more obscure artists that must have taken some tracking down. Another pointer to the work poured into this release is the extensive liner notes penned by James Maycock. The notes cover Brown’s career musically and tell of his growing influence as an inspiration to African-Americans before his career waned in the early 80’s. Every song contained is enriched with informative and interesting notes of the recording and/or the artist who performs it. The highlights include a live version of “Cold Sweat” – a 12 ½ minute orgy of improvisation and energy. Otis Redding does a fine version of “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”, another live version, however this remains more or less faithful to the original. Aretha Franklin features with “Money Won’t Change You”. This track oozes cool soul! The Capitols do a mean version of “Please Please Please”. For lovers of soul and particularly James Brown, or for those interested in exploring the music this collection is a must. |
