:: Mohicans – Music Inspired By The Deep Spirit of Native Americans

Various Artists

I will admit that when I received this CD I was unsure how to approach it. I generally do not listen to world music, so as a consequence it got pushed to the back, in what can only be seen as the great art of procrastination. Finally, left with no excuses, I had no option but to put the CD in and press play. What greeted me was an album of beautifully crafted tracks, richly ambient and inspiring. Well known for their storytelling abilities, ‘Mohicans’ continues the Native American tradition, conjuring images of the landscape, the vast desert, the high and Rocky Mountains, and the people themselves, their spirit so deeply rooted to the earth. Unlike much mainstream music, this is not a track-by-track experience, but rather an entire album journey. What makes this story so special, is that like the human journey there is no real beginning or end, just the journey itself. It is easy to become lost in the music, to find yourself settling into a general disposition of ease. Considering my reluctance to listen to the album in the first place, I am amazed at how quickly it managed to change my point of view, so that ultimately I really liked it. I guess you can’t ask for much more than that.
