:: Zoolander -€“ Music From The Motion Picture

Various Artists

To be completely honest I didn’t really have to listen to this soundtrack to review it. I knew nearly all the tracks already, but I thought I would give it a shot to see how it all came together. The songs pertain to actual scenes in the movie, which when taken in context are funny and the pairing of music with the particular scene makes perfect sense. Therefore, when an oddball collection of songs appears on one CD, there is little but novelty value in the collection. Not that I was expecting high art from the soundtrack to a movie about a moronic professional male model who is hypnotised via Frankie goes to Hollywood into killing the President of Malaysia. Ben Stiller plays the international male model in question and the movie is a memorable collection of jokes, celebrity cameo’s and a classic scene involving David Bowie and a catwalk. The soundtrack features the hypnotic song in question, Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, together with a worthy cover by Rufus Wainwright of He ain’t Heavy…He’s my Brother. Other memorable tracks include Herbie Hancock’s seminal Rockit and No Doubt doing the classic Donna Summer disco hit Love to Love you Baby. It makes you realise how good the original is, and what a massive fluke Just a Girl was for No Doubt (not even Gwen Stefani’s voice can save the band any longer). The Freestylers also chip in with the skanky-good summer tune Ruffneck. Funny film, unfunny soundtrack. Some dialogue from the movie would not have gone astray.
