:: PolyserenageorgeBy the time I received a copy of the album, it had already gone Number 1 on the Australian chart, which is a terrific achievement for a band I’ve long admired. This has been an eagerly expected album although much has been heard of some of the songs over a span of three years. But, as a package of george’s work, it sits right up there for quality vocals and musicianship. It’s a credit to Tyrone and Katie Noonan, and their fellow musicians, that the culmination of endless gigs and specific EP/single releases is all brought together through “Polyserena”. There is a terrific upbeat start with “Release”, through their previous hits “Special Ones” and the brilliantly sung “Bastard Son”. These tracks have become strong crowd favourites. Because there is a special feeling in the soulful vocal renditions and instrumentation, ballads are prominent, perhaps a little too prominent for some who know the band’s jazz and funk influences. Perhaps the band’s versatility will show out even more next time because they can get funky and groovy in an addictive manner. Check out the song “Run” to get a good idea on george’s capability. It’s great to see the band running hot, with more upcoming live shows through May and June. This is one of the best Australian albums you will hear in 2002. |
