After making a conscious effort to edge into the mainstream (and succeeding) with their last album, Sonic Animation returns with disappointing LP of inconsistent dance nonsense. Novelty dance takes up a large portion of the album. The swipe at the Australian dance scene – I’m a DJ – is amusing, but ultimately not very good and super showbiz star also rather boring. Elsewhere, the album is patchy self-indulgent electronica, meaningless, senses may be numbed and the awful rhabdomyolisis perfectly demonstrating what happens when you waste time in a studio with expensive equipment. A fat man however, is a gorgeous piece of acid-house nostalgia that hints of what Sonic Animation are capable of, which ultimately makes this release so frustrating.
