Various Artists

Gossip Girls now has a soundtrack! Yes, just when you couldn't get enough of the TV series, some savvy producer has decided to put together a couple of songs used in the show and chuck them on a disc. Perfect for the busy New York socialite on her way to the mall right? Well actually wrong. The problem with TV soundtracks is that the songs onto it are from so many different genres that only a music chameleon would love them all…and OMFGG is no different (by the way in case you hadn't guessed OMFGG stands for Original Music From Gossip Girl). Co-existing on this soundtrack extravaganza are the likes of The Kooks, Crystal Castles, The Pierces and Oppenheimer just to show how diverse the music mix really is. “Feeling Better” by The Teenagers is a great song. Euro-pop-rock, this happy little track has a fantastically accented lead singer and a fun, danceable keyboard beat. “Feeling Better” fades into “One Week of Danger” by The Virgins. A funky indie song, it kills the happy vibe from the last track and takes you on an darker path all together. Then “Got Your Number” by Nadia Oh pops up and you're in Ibiza listening to a very poptastic dance track with a young lady singing about how she's oh so hot. And there you have it…the problem with the soundtrack. OMFGG has some great tracks by relatively non-mainstream artists, like the cool 80's retro beat “Crimewave” by Crystal Castles, but if you really like the song you're better off buying the artist's entire album instead. After all, any soundtrack is really just a glorified i-pod playlist. So if you're into bands like The Ting Tings or Junkie XL go and buy their album and get the whole musical experience rather than this mix bag of melodic mish mash.
