Gotye

The name Gotye is pronounced as ‘Gore-ti-yeah’ and belongs to Victorian Wally De Backer who sings, writes, and produces this album. He is also adept as a multi-instrumentalist, showcasing his work on drums, percussion and piano, in the true art of electronic music accomplishment. What is interesting and appreciated is the fact that there is a lush orchestration of great textures with the vocals over the top. It’s very pure and appealing. Some worthwhile tracks are ‘True To You’, a mostly hip-hop feel with solid beats working well alongside Christine Auriant’s voice. You’ll remember the Evolutionary Vibes compilation that was released at the start of this year. The Gotye track was ‘The Only Thing I Know’. It airs here also and has a slightly different sound, in being more percussion-oriented. Listen out for Michaela Alexander’s vocals on ‘Out Of My Mind’ and the dark-tinged ‘Loath To Refuse’. There are so many different influences throughout and De Backer has obviously observed much over recent years to generate this amount of instrumentation and vocal characteristics. He is quite an adept performer in his own right and is well accompanied by a range of singers and musicians who have been well chosen to fit his ambition and his precise workings. This album is definitely worth a few listens.
