“This Is Grand Atlantic” is the sound of a band hinting at great potential. At their best, this Brisbane foursome successfully channel the spirit of sixties psychedelia, with Pepper-esque horns and soaring Pet Sounds harmonies. The joyous Burning Brighter is a meticulous exercise in Lennon/McCartney stylistics, using Getting Better and Taxman as a springboard. At other times they sink to entertaining but unremarkable facsimiles of early nineties indie music, all lazy hazy Swervedriver rock and recycled Teenage Fanclub melodies with Slapping On The Cuffs veering a little too close to the latter for comfort – it could almost be an outtake from Grand Prix. Yet on the lush and cinematic Wonderful Tragedy they sound like a different band altogether, one who are already outgrowing their indie roots and capable of taking on the world at large. A promising debut.
