She has been dubbed cheeky, irreverent, and fresh. Having won a Critics' Choice Awards at the 2011 Brit Awards, we've all been looking forward to the debut album by Jessie J. “Who You Are” has something on here for everyone. Jessie J is an extremely talented singer and songwriter whose CD is a brilliant showcase of her talents. Encompassing a range of genres from the very soulful to extremely upbeat dance tunes Who You Are is an offering from the very heart of Jessie J. She wrote all of the songs and some of them hold quite a personal meaning and tell of a time in her life that she has chosen to share through this medium. Jessie J is bursting with ideas and it shows. This electro-pop laden set of songs showcases that voice well and gives her range a workout. It is quite a journey through her life and her career to this point. Though she mostly sticks to the predictable un-nuanced phrasing of many young singers desperate to prove that they possess a “good voice,” she sometimes employs a snarky singsong that is very shrill, but at least somewhat distinct. Perhaps we should ask whether the album contains too much for everyone, in terms of variation. Jessie J is definitely a significant solo talent but the only criticism I can find on the album is whether it was produced a bit too hurriedly in order to capitalise on her popularity. Whatever one thinks, there is plenty of scope for improvement, and maybe when the pressure is off she could conjure up a real classic. She is such a sexy woman with an incredible voice. So much talent is evident, and this is just the start.
