:: John Butler Trio - April Uprising

John Butler Trio

John Butler Trio’s latest album ‘April Uprising’ is a diverse mix of political and personal with a familiar but fresh feel to it. The album introduces new trio members Nicky Bomba and Byron Luiters and is recognised by John Butler as being his best work to date. What works for ‘April Uprising’ is its diversity as the tracks transform easily from politics into personal experiences everyone can relate to. ‘Revolution’ opens the album sending off a powerful vibe and high expectation of the songs to follow. The song is like a modern day recreation of the Beatles hit ‘Revolution,’ both with the same idea, yet JBT lyrics are a more honest reflection of the reality of politician corruption. ‘One Way Road’ the unforgettable, catchy song that has dominated our radios and television again sings about corrupt governments but provokes change in an upbeat manner. “The lyrical is heavier than lead and I don’t got no gun. This guitar is my cannon,” the underlying message of the song is that together we as people can come together and make change. ‘Fool for you’ is beautifully constructed and may bring tears to a girl’s eyes. A powerful love song begins with a man defining his love for a woman and ends with reciting his vowels to her. With an orchestra and percussion for backing combined with raw and true lyrics reminds you what the feeling of love is and leaves you craving it. ‘To look like you’ reflects the issue of body image told by a teenage girl who is suffering. The song makes you think about how society is dominated by airbrushed and edited images and it’s unrealistic definition of ‘beautiful.’ The exceptional talent of JBT is reflected in each of the fifteen tracks. You can feel the ecstatic passion for music in every song as all cover a variety of genres and subjects. ‘April Uprising’ has most definitely expanded the JBT fan base and will be an unforgotten album.
