:: Joseph Patrick Moore's Drum & Bass Society - JPM's Drum & Bass Society Vol.1Joseph Patrick Moore's Drum & Bass SocietyFor those of you who like something globally spiced, softly hued and a little different, Joseph Patrick Moore’s first outing with his “Drum & Bass Society’ could be just what you’re after. A lilting flute playing the melody line of Men At Work’s ‘Land Downunder’ whilst a mandolin strums out an offbeat rhythmic accompaniment struck me as a somewhat strange choice for the opening track of an album, especially one that revolves primarily around jazz tinged mood music and oddly alternate recapitulations of well known themes, but there you go. Unsurprisingly, the centrepiece and common thread that runs throughout the fifteen pieces on ‘Volume 1’ is Joseph Patrick Moore himself, an accomplished bassist. His smooth, funk-weighted playing features predominantly in all the mixes. As aforementioned, along with a relatively unorthodox (and hence highly distinctive) choice of instrumentation, it is Moore’s bottom line that allows “Volume 1’ to maintain momentum. Throw in some middle Eastern scales (‘Rain Dance’), trad jazz arrangements and a dash of hip hop and what you end up with here is an oddly weighted little slice of gentle musical eclecticism.
