Unfortunately the quality of hip hop music has been on a slow and painful decline since the Eminem and 50 Cent turning point. But if you turn your attention away from the US, some impressive, new hip hop is still being produced in the UK, the Pacific Islands, France and even our neighbour’s home of New Zealand. DJ and producer Juse is keeping hip hop alive by producing an original sound, borrowing from the old school. Neptunes and Run DMC like riffs prosper through his new album, Global Casino, and despite the hardcore dark rapping, which is quite common in New Zealand and Australia, Juse doesn’t hesitate to throw in soulful vocals and R ‘n’ B sounds. This is an album that could do very well in New Zealand and Australia. Although hip hop has been over produced, over worked and is on its deathbed, it’s quite a refreshing sound amongst the overcrowded pool of indie rock bands in Australia.
