:: Kaki King - Dreaming Of Revenge

Kaki King

Over the course of the last three years, Kaki King has become an endearing figure, particularly within certain circles of the indie rock scene. Her previous work hinted at the fact that she was looking to broaden her appeal and win over a larger audience. Her latest album ‘Dreaming Of Revenge’ continues this movement by providing more structure to her compositions. Kaki's vocals have begun to play a larger role within her compositions and, although it seems as though it comes across as something uncomfortable, there is a charming quality and it provides a context to a more effective record. She obscures her intricacies behind beautiful melody and her tiny voice. I am not a big fan of continual instrumentals - only very occasional ones in the right setting - so I welcome this aspect of Kaki's set. She is a very capable guitarist and enjoys the lap steel greatly. She enthuses in her aim for more expansive instrumentation but I don't know whether she's ready for the big sounding orchestrals as yet. Yet, she is an intriguing artist who doesn't need to try too hard in grasping for an extra musical hat. She's still moving on, although it's not clear where she'll end up. Dreaming Of Revenge is an interesting pop record, in being a crossover for an instrumentalist.
