Kate Rae is one of those earnest, hard-working singer-songwriters who will always give her best in performance. I have been introduced to the Melbourne artist through her EP ‘My Love’, a four-track set of calm and understated songs, recorded in a minimal scale with only small amounts of backing vocals and drums to accompany Kate and her guitar. She has the style suited to the folk-laden, small bar setting where one can get up close and personal to her songs. Kate writes of her personal, everyday experiences and sings with that voice of fragility. Perhaps the vocals need a little more versatility and inspiration to help up the ante - to take her to the next level and attract greater audiences. Added instrumentation will also create more structured soundscapes too. That may well come with further development. There is definitely some promise with her songwriting capabilities.
