:: Kid Sister - Ultraviolet

Kid Sister

‘Ultraviolet’ is an album three years in the making. The Chicago party-rapper has recorded this debut effort, scratching it, starting over, tinkering, and finally coming out with the product she really wanted to release. The title of the album nods to the black-light-saturated dance floors and basement parties that her music is designed to soundtrack. It features the already well-known single “Pro Nails” featuring Kanye West. So, as you might expect, it's got some heat. But it doesn't totally sizzle. Even with the high-profile collaborations of West, Cee-Lo Green and Estelle, it's a pretty mixed bag in terms of rapping and lyrical content. The lyrics play it safe for the genre. Not one line here will make you blush like when somebody such as Amanda Blank is on the mic. The singing is decent, but it's not going to blow you away. That said, the album still works on conceptual level, even when the creative execution fails to stun. Ultraviolet certainly doesn’t lack in personality. Kid Sister is still evolving as an artist and we should be prepared to exercise some slack in summarising the merits, or otherwise, of this album. Next time, we'll look for some enticing catchy hooks and maybe create the right formula of electro-dance beats for choruses and high paced old school rhymes to break up the tempo when required.
