Unseen Music, Unheard Words is the product of three years of collaboration between The Church front man Steve Kilbey and All India Radio’s Martin Kennedy. Over the course of three years, the two artists corresponded only via their work. Kennedy wrote the music and sent it to Kilbey to add lyrics and vocals as he saw fit. The resulting album is an ambient, dreamy collection of songs with Kilbey’s distinctive, breathy vocals giving it the feeling of some sort of ominous lullaby. It reminded me a little bit of The Go-Betweens, members of which Kilbey has collaborated with in the past and French chill-out duo Air. Stand-out tracks for me include Stretch into the Stars, Thought of Leaving and The Other Place. I suggest that this album be played at dusk, red wine in hand, or at about three in the morning after a big night out!
