In my humble opinion ‘The Kings Of…’ series of compilations is a must have for any one serious about their music. World renowned reggae scholars David Rodigan and Sting International were recruited for this reggae sequel and the results are a double disc selection of tracks that showcases the many different shades of reggae music. We have a track from the influential The Abyssinians who are one of the first bands to invent the roots vocal style that is still so prevalent today. We also have Dennis Brown’s ever popular ‘Here I Come’ and John Holt’s seminal ‘Police in Helicopter’, a firm favourite with DJ’s till this day. The compilation wisely stays away from any Bob Marley tracks as that would have easily overshadowed the other artists. In a time where there are too many pale compilations under the banner of reggae, The Kings of Reggae is timely for it is done by people who are dead serious about this indigenous form of music. Highly recommended.
