:: Koshowko - Anarchy Monarchy

Koshowko

Funky new electro-pop team Koshowko’s debut EP “Anarchy Monarchy” aims to surprise and definitely delivers, producing a CD combining sophisticated electronic grooves with a mix of eclectic yet impressive vocals. The EP kicks off with the instantly haunting yet catchy “It’s Time Now,” featuring the strong and sensual voice of Florence Fogarasi. The catchy beat and bass provide a groovy undertone to the evocative vocals, and the song develops and deepens nicely, continuously intensifying and improving until it softens and fades towards the end. The slow groove is obviously the hook of the song, and the contrast between the base and the lilting vocals is memorable. After “It’s Time Now,” the expectation for Koshowko’s next song on the EP, “(Hu)mannequin”, is high. The instrumental introduction is ambiguous as to how the song will develop, leaving you not sure what to expect of this next song, yet it gradually builds up adding the heavy guitars to create an electro rock feel. While the song’s take on the fashion industry is just a bit of fun, this second addition to the EP comes across as shallow and slightly empty, compared to the melodic haunting sounds of “It’s Time Now.” “

The Story” is a track which truly shows the potential of Koshowko, with the nice lilting keys at the beginning of the song reminiscent of “It’s Time Now”, yet with a more edgy, rock infused sound. Brea Acton’s powerful, high-pitched vocals contrast brilliantly against the booming bassline, while the keys in the song add something fresh to the otherwise repetitive techno sound. The pretty, soft, dance sound of “Whispers” creates a sensual electro-pop song with a chilled out vibe. Arnie Chelvendra’s brooding and unique voice speaks of loss and hope, while the warm jazz tones of the saxophone create a sense of drama and almost tell a story of their own. The final song is “The Story” (artifical Wrinkle Rhythm remix), a smooth, catchy remake of their previous song, creating a more experimental and dramatic version. This version of “The Story” is not as mainstream as the other, as it takes a slower pace and emphasizes the different electronic effects used throughout the composition. “Anarchy Monarchy” is a blend of electro, dance, pop, rock, jazz and experimental music, while each song tells a different story. The result is a delicious musical smoothie which caters for everyone’s tastes.
