:: Lanie Lane - To The Horses

Lanie Lane

The name Lanie Lane has been on “watch for 2011” list and this year the Australian singer-songwriter came to the forefront after news that one of the album tracks Ain’t Hungry was produced by Jack White (ex-White Stripes). As it turned out, the 11-track CD comes with a download card for the two Jack White produced bonus tracks: “Ain’t Hungry” & “My Man”. Having recorded this album within a week, the songs come up well and prove what a great talent Lanie is. She draws on the past and plants it firmly in the present. Lanie demonstrates a voice beyond her years; one that is rich and warm as it is sweet. The songs weave through a heady mix of early rock ‘n’ roll, blues, and rockabilly, serving up stories and emotions of love, lust, and heartbreak, and the instrumentation backs her capably as well. Despite many of the tracks prompting a sudden urge to take up swing dancing, the record is also peppered with darker blues tunes like "What Do I Do?” and “That’s What You Get”, which is a standout track. “Like Me Meaner” is a vindictive track and Lanie “gets her hands dirty” in a terrific delivery. “Ain’t Hungry” is merely a bonus to the collection. Infused with White’s signature electric riffs and layered vocals, the song jives and charms with the cheeky, and it shows out as a highlight because of the obvious contrast in production style to the remainder of the album. Overall, To The Horses is addictive as Lanie displays a grace and charm with her debut album, though showing those touches of being distinctly earthy. A fine future lies ahead.
