:: Lefties Soul Connection - Skimming the Skum

Lefties Soul Connection

Lefties Soul Connection is a Dutch band with lots of sass. In Skimming the Skum, they pull off a fairly mainstream sound better than most and they’ve come up with some solid tracks. They name funk legends The Meters as an influence but also Beastie Boys, Jurassic 5 and The Roots, which can be vaguely heard in some tracks, like Freaky Franky. As far as funk bands go, they’d probably be a party-hard, get-down-and-dirty band to see live. Unfortunately, the effect is not the same coming out of your speakers. The album is well-produced but not particularly original. They come up with some juicy riffs but are put on an overly repetitive loop. Perhaps some vocals would spice it up a little. It’s great to see bands like the Lefties not being a slave to their genre and embracing different styles, but the mix of styles from track to track means their identity is a little lost. If you’re a funk fan, you may find yourself skipping half the album.
