:: Liam Finn - FOMO

Liam Finn

The one thing you can’t accuse Liam Finn of doing is resting on the laurels of the fact that he is son of legendary Split Enz/Crowded House member, Neil Finn. Whether it was fronting Betchadupa or his brilliant debut album, I’ll Be Lightning, Liam Finn has always been a creative artist who seems to want to outdo what he has done in the past. That can certainly be said for his new album FOMO an album so different from most other CDs on the market that you really don’t know what genre to pin Finn into. Tracks like ‘Neurotic World’ are melodic and absolutely beautiful to listen to while ‘Don’t Even Know Your Name’ brings a happy, cheery sound to the album. There is also a hint of elecronica just under the surface, perhaps the result of the work of producer, Burke Reid who was once a member of Gerling. The feel good mood of FOMO continues with ‘Roll Of The Eye’ while Finn manages to create a real wall-of-sound effect on ‘Cold Feet’, a track not too dissimilar to what we have come to know and love from Ben Lee. The groovy sound of Gerling is certain present on ‘Real Late’, a track that seems to have its own persona away from the rest of the album. ‘The Struggle’ sees Finn take on a heavier rock feel and it works while ‘Little Words’ has an eerie feel but sounds absolutely beautiful to listen to… if that makes sense… give the track a listen and you’ll know what I mean. Both ‘Reckless’ and ‘Chase The Seasons’ have a real pop-rock feel to them, the former really does deserve radio play (wake up Australian radio stations). FOMO then closes with ‘Jump The Bones’ a catchy track with a massive amount of background noise that really does drag it into the experimental field. Liam Finn tries a lot of different things on FOMO and to his credit they mostly work. Not exactly a masterpiece but still well worth a listen.
