Lovejoy

For the most part Lovejoy is everything a rock band should be, from their studded necklaces right down to their army boots and heavy riffs. However, putting aside its perfect image and overwhelming readiness to rock, the self-titled EP leaves the expectant listener hanging on and hoping for more. That’s not to say Lovejoy doesn’t have the goods, I’m sure they have no trouble whipping a live crowd into frenzy, the problem lies in the recording quality. As live b-sides the tracks are more than adequate, but as studio releases they just fall short of the required tweaking. Noticeably absent is the sound of the band gelling together, really playing in sync and jamming. Instead there is an odd mismatched quality that fails to ignite the ears. There is a glimpse of promise in the track Five Fingered Bride which has patches of definite gelling, so although they may not have quite hit the mark this time, they are definitely a band to watch.
