This album is by San Francisco’s Tom Shimura (aka Lyrics Born) and has been appreciated greatly in the USA as one of the most inventive releases of the last twelve months. Lyrics Born has been a long-time friend and collaborator of Blackalicious and DJ Shadow, who are label mates as well. He therefore brings some often exciting elements into the sound and brings a high production standard. The funk and groove works well with the soulful vocal styles and he creates different moods and textures. The end result is very tangible as Shimura’s hip hopping delves into personal issues and delivered in tongue-in-cheek manner as he tells of life’s frustrations. The tracks are very even in standard, with no real highlights, and are also most challenging.
